The Matelli region of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, recently witnessed a vibrant celebration marking the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, a revered anti-colonial revolutionary leader and social reformer. Birsa’s legacy as a symbol of resistance against British oppression has inspired generations, particularly within the Adivasi community. It is essential to recognize the ongoing impact of external forces that have historically dominated and exploited Adivasi communities and their territories—the same forces that Birsa valiantly fought against. These forces, now in a different form, continue to threaten the lives and lands of the Adivasi people. Reclaiming Birsa's story from the control of dominant groups and state narratives is crucial to genuinely honor his legacy and inspire a renewed struggle against the persistent threats to the Adivasi way of life. By honoring the legacy of Birsa Munda, participants reaffirmed their commitment to fighting for their rights and empowering their community.
The event was organized by the youth from Matelli, Nagaisuree, and Killkote tea gardens, showcasing a passionate engagement from children, students, and community members alike. The gathering served not only as a tribute to Munda's sacrifices and his relentless fight for the rights to land, water, and the forest—collectively referred to as Jal-Jangal-Jamin—but also as a platform to address the pressing challenges faced by the Adivasi community today.
A rally was held to narrate Munda’s invaluable contributions, emphasizing his role in advocating for justice and dignity. His life story was presented as a beacon of hope, inspiring community empowerment and collective strength. The participants echoed Munda's principles, reinforcing the importance of standing together against oppression.
In addressing contemporary issues, the event shed light on a tragic incident that has shaken the community—a brutal crime involving an Adivasi girl from Bhagatpur Tea Garden, known as Dooars Kanya (name changed). Her horrific rape and murder by a non-Adivasi individual highlighted the urgent need for justice and safety for women in the Adivasi community. The gathering expressed unwavering solidarity with Dooars Kanya, sending a powerful message to the authorities that such incidents will not be forgotten and that the fight for justice must continue.
The discussions during the event also focused on several critical social issues affecting the Adivasi community, including:
- Demand for Minimum Wage: Advocating for fair wages for tea garden workers, who often struggle to make ends meet.
- Land Ownership Rights: Calling for the recognition of land ownership rights for the Adivasi community, which has historically been marginalized.
- Corruption and Mismanagement: Addressing issues related to corruption and mismanagement in provident funds that affect the livelihood of workers.
- Violence Against Women: Combating violence against women and ensuring their safety and dignity in society.
The celebration served as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of the Adivasi community to uphold justice and equality. The event not only celebrated the past but also galvanized the community to confront the challenges of the present, ensuring that the spirit of resistance and hope continues to thrive. Recognizing Adivasi movements against land grabs and violence provides a new lens on Birsa's legacy. These struggles underscore the ongoing marginalization and exploitation that Birsa fought against. To truly honor him, we must understand the complexities of his fight within the broader Adivasi resistance for Jal, Jangal, and Jameen, highlighting their ongoing quest for justice and empowerment.
